Directions for use

Contents of the different possibilities offered to the users when entering the laboratory :

Visit the collaborative space now !

To work in the collaborative space, the users could arrange to meet together, fix a date and time when they will connect and work together in the same space, they can also determine a duration for the performance.
Then we could give them the possibility to propose this performance to everybody who wish to participate (every user able to connect to the E-galab site) or to lock the performance for the persons of their choice (for example for a private performance).
Anyway, every person entering the site, will be able to see the performances in progress (even the private performances).

So we have to think about different « rooms » proposed when entering the Laboratory :

- First- the previous works :
The user will be able to see the works made previously in the collaborative space and observe the evolution, step by step, through the form of a movie ; the work is the entire evolution including each transformation of the performance.

- Second- the works in progress :
If there is a performance in progress, the user can be spectator of it.

- Third- the futur works :
Users can fix a date and time when they will connect and work together for a certain length of time.

Directions for use

The collaborative space is a 3D space with a vrml navigation system in which several users can connect and work together in real time on and with the same materials.
Each user have a dissociated point of view and is able to see each transformation made by the others.
There is no possibility to lock the works in progress, so each user have to be aware that their work could be transformed at any time by anyone. The idea of sharing the works is primordial and is one of the central points of this project. Another important idea is the multiplicity of points of view on a work in progress.

Before entering the collaborative space, the users have to upload their files to the E-galab server by selecting items in the different categories (2D,3D,movies or sound), and then update this category.
Once in the 3D space, users can work with all the files inside the server (it means their own files but also files of the others), they have the opportunity to create many different objects and insert them in the virtual world. These objects can be transformed at any time by anybody connected to this world.
Objects can be manipulated by different persons at the same time.

List of tools offered to the users :


Object Creation or importation of objects (plane surface, plane surface with points, cube, sphere, cone, cylinder) and 3D objects in vrml ; possibility to name, delete or change the form of each object.Each time a new object is created, it appears at the same place, i.e at the original point of view. To go to this point of view, there is a navigation tool from the cortona window called « restore ».
Texture 4 possible textures : still image, video, sound or typing text.
Move Give an object any position in the space by manipulating the 3 axes x,y,z.
Rotate To rotate the object in the 3 directions.
Scale To scale object
Pull Affiliated to the « plane surface with points » object and allows to grab and drag several points, to give a 3D form to a plane surface.
Transp To apply to the object a total transparency.
Memory To record the entire scene with all its manipulations ; it is then possible to reload a scene and see all the transformations made step by step.
Colors Allows to texture each object with a choice of colors and a scale for each RVB colors.

Necessary materials and files format :

Hardware PC computer with a good graphic card 3D graphics accelerator
Recommended: GeForce4Ti 4200, AGP 8x, 128MB or ATI Radeon 9100 128MB DDR
Examples of minimum: ATI Radeon 7500 64 MB or GeForce4 MX 440 64MB
Plug-in Cortona VRML client (download)
Files format all files have to be light
Less than 50 ko for each video (it means videos with few images)
Video videos work as loops
compression : best is flash format/avi/gif animated (no quicktime.mov or other heavy compression)
Picture best is jpeg
Sound best is mp3
